Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, restores a smooth, toned appearance to the abdomen. This procedure involves two essential maneuvers. First, excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen is removed. Secondly, the weakened or separated abdominal wall muscles are tightened. The end result is a more contoured and firmer tummy.

"I frequently combine tummy tucks with liposuction preformed to the upper abdomen, flanks and even the back. This modern approach achieves a contour to the entire trunk that would be impossible with either procedure alone."

A tummy tuck involves a horizontal incision below the abdomen and just above the pubic area. As a result, a scar at the bikini line will be permanent, though it will fade with time and is generally unseen under most underwear or swimsuits.

In selected patients, a “mini” tummy tuck is performed. This procedure tightens the abdominal wall muscles and removes excess skin, while limiting the amount of undermining and scar formation. Like the standard tummy tuck procedure, mini tummy tucks can be combined with liposuction.

If you’re in the midst of substantial weight loss, you might need to hold off on cosmetic procedures until you have seen how your body adjusts, and how much elasticity your skin retains once your weight is stable.

Who is a good candidate for tummy tuck?

Anyone who:
  • is at a stable weight, but with a midsection that is out of proportion or refusing to shrink with exercise or diet
  • has lost a substantial amount of weight, resulting in loose abdominal skin
  • has had multiple pregnancies, resulting in a loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone around their midsection

How long does it take to recover from a tummy tuck?

After a tummy tuck, the abdomen will be swollen for a few days and some pain is likely. If liposuction has also been performed, the degree of swelling will be greater. Dr. Horowitz will prescribe a pain medication to alleviate any pain or discomfort. Stitches are dissolvable and do not need to be removed. Drains are placed and are usually removed within two weeks of the procedure.

It may take several weeks to appreciate the ultimate results of your surgery, depending on the individual and procedure. Those with stronger abdominal muscles will find a shortened recovery as their body more easily adapts. Regardless of physical condition, it is crucial to work out an exercise program, as this will help reduce the swelling, lower the chance of blood clots, and work to further tone your new body.

Once fully recovered, a tummy tuck can produce excellent results, generally lasting as long as a balanced diet and regular exercise are maintained.
