Liposuction is popular among both men and women who want to slim or reshape a specific area of the body. Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery and should not be thought of as one. It’s more helpful to think of liposuction as a sculpting technique that can create beautiful and natural looking curves.
Dr. Horowitz uses “Power Assisted Liposuction,” which means less force is required to move the liposuction canula, thus decreasing postoperative pain and bruising compared to traditional liposuction methods.
The Surgical Procedure
Tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure that is performed at our surgical facility. Anesthesia is administered for your comfort. Dr. Horowitz will make a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen (just above the pubic area). This incision is low enough that any scarring will be just above the pubic area. Dr. Horowitz will remove excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen, and tighten the abdominal musculature. He may make an additional incision around the belly button and relocate it to a higher position on the abdomen. Then, he will re-drape the skin more tightly over the abdomen, close the incisions with absorbable sutures and apply surgical dressings. When appropriate, liposuction is performed to sculpt the contours of the abdomen, hips, buttocks and lower back.
If you are considering liposuction, you should be in good health, at a stable weight and have a good degree of elasticity in your skin. You should not have any serious medical conditions which could compromise your healing. Baltimore surgeon Dr. Horowitz will meet with you individually to discuss how liposuction can best help you to achieve your goals.
Liposuction can be used to create beautiful contours or sculpt the following:
- Back (low back and bra-line)
- Face (cheeks, chin, neck)

The Day of Surgery
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that is performed with either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. During liposuction, Dr. Horowitz will make several small incisions in the treatment area and insert a thin, hollow tube (called a cannula). The cannula delivers a combination of liquid anesthetic and epinephrine to constrict the blood vessels and minimize bleeding. Dr. Horowitz will move the cannula back and forth to break up the fat deposits. Then, he will suction the loosened fat from the body. Finally, he will close the incisions and place a compression garment around the treated area.
If you are considering having several areas of your body treated at once, please discuss this possibility with Dr. Horowitz during your surgical consultation.
You will feel sore, swollen and bruised after liposuction. The swelling and bruising will subside within several weeks. Dr. Horowitz advises that you keep your compression garment in place for about a month after the procedure, as it helps “shrink” the skin. He will want to see you several times after surgery to check on the progress of your healing.
