Facial Fat Grafting

What is facial fat grafting (FFG)?

Traditionally, facial rejuvenation has involved removing loose and saggy skin and elevating drooping tissues with sutures. Although these excisional procedures still play an important role, forward thinking surgeons now recognize the importance of volume that is the hallmark of the youthful, healthy face.

FFG involves obtaining fat from any appropriate part of the body and injecting it back into key areas of the face to produce such pleasing results. Common areas of the face that can lose volume with either age or significant weight loss and would benefit from fat grafting include the temples, under eye hollows, the cheeks and jowls.

How does FFG differ from injectable fillers?

While there are many different kinds of injectable fillers, they all have in common that they provide only temporary results. Although a portion of the grafted fat may dissolve, the fat that survives the early postoperative period will provide permanent improvement.

This is a common concern amongst potential FFG patients. Like all procedures Dr. Horowitz performs, FFG is tailored to the individual patient’s needs and desires. Care is taken to produce natural results, while not over-volumizing the face.

I’m interested in FFG but I don’t want a fat face.

Can FFG be combined with other procedures?

This procedure complements other facial rejuvenation procedures such as facelifts, browlifts and eyelid surgery. FFG requires the use of general anesthesia or IV sedation.

What is recovery like following FFG?

Recovery after FFG is related to the necessary liposuction or any other facial procedures performed at the same time, such as a facelift. If FFG is performed alone, the recovery from the liposuction portion of the procedure involves light activity for two weeks. No specific care is required for the face.

"I listen to my patients’ concerns and devise unique treatment plans with their input, rather than pushing my ideas upon them. I make sure patients have realistic expectations. It’s my job to help them meet their goals while also being honest about what they can and cannot expect from any given procedure."
